Stephen James Golka, unexpectedly passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 7, 2018 in Sacramento CA. He was 68.

Steve was born on August 9, 1949 in Alliance NE to Leonard and Madelyn Golka. He was raised on their ranch in Hemingford Nebraska with his sister and four brothers. He met his wife of 43 years Barbara (Babcock) Huston and her three children in Fairbury NE. They married in 1975. They have two sons together and five grandchildren.

Steve received a PharmD from the University of Nebraska (1972) and a MBA from Pepperdine University (1981). He began his career as a pharmacist in 1972 at drug stores in Scottsbluff and Sidney, NE. He joined Hospital Pharmacies Incorporated (HPI) in 1973 and worked as a pharmacist at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital in Fairbury, NE. Beginning in 1978, Steve received several promotions with HPI and oversaw the management of hospital pharmacies across the Western States. During this time, the family resided in Beaverton OR, Sacramento CA, and Thousand Oaks CA. After leaving HPI in 1986, he became the pharmacy director at Marion Medical Center in Santa Maria CA and in 2000 the pharmacy director at Sierra Vista Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, CA. They returned to Sacramento in 2002, where he was the pharmacist for Kindred Health Care and at the time of his passing he was the Pharmacy Director for the County of Sacramento. Steve was highly principled and dedicated to his profession.

Steve enjoyed watching sports and was a die-hard fan of Nebraska Cornhusker football. In high school, he was a star athlete and could throw a football a country mile. In his spare time, he enjoyed an occasional game of golf and wood working. Most of all he enjoyed attending his grandchildren's various activities and events. They always brought out his warm smile.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, children Joshua Golka (Stephanie), Jason Golka (Leila Carlin), Doug Huston (Carly), Dan Huston (June) and Debi Huston, five grandchildren Joshua, Jace, Justin, Madelyn (Golka) and Cole (Huston) all of whom live in the Sacramento area. He is also survived by his mother Madelyn (Golka) Boyer, sister Kathy (Bob) McFarland and brothers Mike (Lori), Tom (Maxine), Dan (Ronda Skinner), and Chris along with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his father Leonard Golka and stepfather Ross Boyer.

To honor his wishes a private memorial service is planned for his family members. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of Nebraska Foundation, College of Pharmacy Excellence Fund www.nufoundation.org or sent to the University of Nebraska Foundation, 1010 Lincoln Mall Suite 300, Lincoln, NE 68508.
